Oh, man. Halloween is upon us again! And for me, it’ll be my first sober Halloween in, well… I can’t tell you how long. Probably sometime in high school, for anyone who likes to do math, that’s somewhere around 1989. Sh*t, I’m old!

No weigh in today
In the lead up to Halloween, I’ve eaten way too much candy! Much more than I normally would eat otherwise. You know, the whole addiction transfer deal. Anyway, I’m not of the mind to weigh in this morning as a consequence of the copious amounts of sugar I’ve consumed over the past 48 hours. But frankly, I’d rather munch down a pile of candy if it results in a sober Halloween. And, I’m happy to report, it has.
Happy Sober Halloween!
I celebrated my first sober Halloween dressed as a Ghostbuster, and got the front of the house all decked out (header photo above). Then I assembled a giant bowl of candy. I was ready for whatever the trick or treaters had up their sleeves. Bring it on!
Monday Night Football kept my daughter and I occupied between Halloween revelers (man, the Browns really beat up on the poor Bengals this year!). Whenever we heard the pitter patter of footsteps busting through the frontgate, we played rock, paper, scissors to determine who would give out candy next.
I let her win most of the time.
After MNF, I put in my Peanuts Holiday Collection DVD (sorry, streamers) and we watched It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
A Watershed All Hallows’ Eve
This was definitely a watershed moment for me. A sober Halloween wasn’t on my radar a few months ago. Halloween has traditionally been a partying holiday. I really enjoyed putting on a costume (last year I was a 1950’s greaser and the year before that I was Mr. Incredible), getting really high, cracking open a 12 pack, and giving out candy to kids and beers to adults.
I wonder if the adults were expecting beer… Oh, well. Not this year. I noticed about half of them had ‘roadies’ anyway. Party on, Garth!
Sober or not, Halloween was still a lot of fun. I really didn’t miss drinking at all. Now that I always have my preferred non-alcoholic beers in the fridge, I’m good to go. I have to say, they really hit the spot when I’m craving a beer, and I find the hops relax me. I’m thrilled I was able to find a decent non-alcoholic IPA.
It goes without saying that all the candy I ate last night put a damper on Drinkie. It produced enough dopamine (and insulin) to kill an elephant. As I mentioned before, no sense in weighing in after my sugar gluttony. That would just be depressing. But, hey what’s a sober Halloween or any Halloween, for that matter, without candy? That would be madness! Plus I’m a real sucker for 100 Grand Bars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and Milk Duds.
Well, I had my fun. It’s back on the no sugar bandwagon for me for the rest of the week, at least. I’m going to put together a Zero+ Triple today to get me back on track!
Happy Sober Halloween!!
