I’ve been questioning the increasingly slippery slope of my use disorder and considering a path toward sobriety for years now.
To date, this is by far the most intense meditation experience yet. But rather than leaving me drained, I actually felt much lighter. Much lighter, in fact, than I’ve felt in a very long time. I was left not only lighter, but deeply inspired and loved.
A few weeks into my sobriety journey, I noticed I was starting to save money and a lot more than I expected.
In becoming more mindful, your goal is create space so you can more objectively view your thought parade, better understand how it is affecting you physically, spiritually, and emotionally. You are now free to make better decisions having disengaged your autopilot.
A big part of mindfulness training is exploring where thoughts and emotions manifest in your body. So despite not needing anything in this section of the store, rather than avoid it, I made the conscious decision to not only go out of my way to visit the beer aisle, but to be fully present while there.
In his book Ego Is The Enemy, Ryan Holiday delves into why and how ego can be both our greatest asset and biggest liability. As an asset, ego drives us to succeed in a competitive world. Alternatively, it can at the same time become the undercurrent that drags us down and becomes our eventual undoing.
