Last night I had a strange and somewhat disturbing experience. While applying rubbing alcohol to a pimple on the back of my neck, for a fleeting instant, I actually considered tasting it. Immediately, my rational mind rode to the rescue and prevented me from going through with it. I mean, shit, I’m not Kitty Dukakis for crying out loud!
The tarot reading truly amazed me. I can’t reconcile the sheer coincidence of the tarot reading with our conversations that evening. Nor can I wrap my head around how closely these cards in this specific order resembled the current state of my sobriety journey as I see it.
I kept thinking about sipping on some Swami IPA tall boys on more than one occasion. It’s funny how I never think about pot anymore, but the voice beer and alcohol still lingers in the back crevices of my mind. I call it a voice, because it speaks to me.
Besides being an overused word to describe such things, journey doesn’t begin to describe the trip I’m experiencing. I’d rather use the word adventure. I’m on a sober adventure. And know this because the twists and turns have presented me with an unexpected opportunity to build myself a rather excellent sobriety toolbox.
I’ve found some simple but powerful sober hobbies that keep my mind occupied and my alcoholic monkey at bay. These hobbies are helping me string together ever longer sobriety stretches. Maybe they can help you do the same.
